Cyprus is the place to build a new idea on old ground.
A spot of localism ‘vieuw on the sea’
The new antiquity
The front of the building is open to the beach in a way so there is no hinder between beach , sea and indoor. At the back of the house the sealing meets the base floor and provides a cozy safe feeling from where you will like to watch the sea. Behind the building the roof is part of the garden, again a cozy, from wind protected area to enjoy a meal. Top is on top of the roof, you can enjoy a drink or a meal by a perfect few over sea.
In Cyprus the climate comfort inside houses was traditional good thanks to thick walls. Why is this way of building no more practice? This way of building does not suite other purpose but climate.
Our new way of building, the natural roof, keeps the comfort from traditional mass; and introduces natural ventilation, no dust and no need for air conditioning it introduces comfort for the future at a low level of energy cost
The open sea-side well protected
Natural roofs are overgrown by vegetation. The grass covered roof is a subset, integrated in its surrounding habitat.
Why are natural roofs necessity?
So the hardened surface does not increase any more, this is a worldwide, uncontroversial aim. Nature roofs contribute to a solution. To realize is another matter.
There are many untouchable motives that keep us away from the choice for the grass roof. In this treatise on nature grass roofs or natural roofs in general we aim to make prejudices negotiable and to break open a new way by knowledge and understanding.
If we see the cities as desert, after all the hardened surface has all the features of this, then it makes sense that we approach this problem otherwise. Paved surface is too vulgar. Now we have to find a solution.
I was frequently asked:
Why should someone choose a grass roof?
My counter-question is:
Why would you want to live under a piece of desert, that we call tile roof?
Green on the roof, green allover
The roof as part of a garden
All green and live …
Within and ...
... outside and ...
... again outside
